In making tequila, large amounts of water are mixed with the crushed agave resulting in a leftover liquid from the distilling process called “stillage”. Rather than be discarded, this stillage is put through a reverse osmosis system designed by Patrón that recovers up to 70 percent of the usable water in the by-product. The recovered water from the stillage is used throughout Hacienda Patrón in cleaning, gardens, and in the facility’s cooling towers. In 2016 alone, about 24 million liters of water were reused throughout Hacienda Patrón, with about 30 million liters projected to be reused in 2017. By reusing the water that goes into producing Patrón tequila, less is needed in the facilities and operations, and more is preserved for the earth.
What the Water Gave Me
Patrón made water work double time for your favorite margarita, so take inspiration to do the same by making the most of the ice left over in your empty glass and pour a second round. Wouldn’t want your (frozen) water to go to waste!
