Venture into the Darkness of Patrón x Guillermo del Toro

The pursuit of perfection met its match when film mastermind Guillermo del Toro, a native Jaliscan, came to the Hacienda to bring his artistic approach to Patrón’s process. What came from this partnership was Patrón’s darkest product to date in both age and ideation. The signature bottle holds a perfect extra añejo tequila featuring a blend of aged tequilas averaging 5 years in used oak barrels upside down. The bottle is crowned by a skull resting on top holding an aged deep orange liqueur that perfectly complements the tequila’s symphony of dark flavors. This pairing of products reflects the pairing of film and tequila that came about through Patrón x Guillermo del Toro. 

Meet the Masters

Patrón x Guillermo del Toro is the culmination of two masters coming together in one masterful spirit. Francisco Alcaraz is the master of Patrón with a history going back over two decades in creating the recipes and processes Patrón still uses today to make the perfect spirit. Francisco distilled the core values of Patrón - Time, Life and Maturity – making Patrón the perfect product for Guillermo del Toro who appreciates the level of work put into the iconic tequila and his own work. Del Toro is a master of film, having created such hits as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone in a true distillation of darkness. He writes and produces fantastical works that transport audiences to new worlds through novel sights and sounds that delight and terrify around every turn. 

Designing Darkness

Guy Davis, a regular collaborator with del Toro on his many visions, began sketching elements of the illustrations for the intricate box in March 2015. Over time and many discussions, the box became an altar to the perfection of Patrón and Guillermo del Toro’s mind. With odes to Mexican culture and heritage through icons representing the tequila making process, the box takes on a life of its own as a drinking ritual. 

Sip Sinfully

The devilish dual-sided bottle deserved signature cocktails that perfectly balanced the two aged spirits. Creating the sinful cocktails came down to Patrón’s own bartenders who took classics and twisted them to incorporate ingredients that perfectly accented the deeper aged flavors of this limited-edition tequila. The cocktails pair neatly with the ritual warranted by Patrón x Guillermo del Toro and allow you to sip darkly into the night.
